U14G 1XI v St Albans T1 League Match 1st Dec'24

Andrew Bryce1 Dec 2024 - 17:44

A hard fought 1-1 battle.

The girls started the game with a positive attitude after an effective warm up to get them in the right mindset. They were passing the ball around the pitch confidently, trusting one another from the back three right to our three forwards. New player Sophie fitted in well using her experience with some school team mates to get the ball moving effectively.

At 13mins in Summer had a power run in the D and managed to let loose an absolute rocket of her backhand into the roof of the net, I think she hopes someone managed to get it on camera!

The Ipswich side dominated the rest of the second half and had several efforts from our forwards, Lara, Summer, Sophie, Betsy and Idunn. These included number of short corners saved by their excellent GK and defenders on the line. Equally our defence worked really hard pressing the opposition and leaving them on a handful of opportunities to get in to our 25.

Half time came and the coaching team shared their delight at how the team were playing, it had been one of their strongest performances to date.

The second half saw St Albans coming out a bit more attacking but our defence of Millie, Freya, Lauren and Jemima held strong and tackled hard, doubling up to stop their attacks. The mid field worked their legs of going up and down the field, with Maisie and Annabel bossing the middle of the field and Izzy, Millie and India working hard to give us great attacks out wide.

In the last quarter the girls were starting to tire, especially for some of those that play a game or two the day before. St Albans had a few more breaks and one of those lead to a short corner for encroaching on the 5m from one of their free hits. It was a little harsh but this then lead to a goal from an excellent strike that was deemed just at the legal height according to the umpires. There was nothing keeper Eva could do about it as it flew past just inside the post.

The team had dust themselves off and go again. They fought really hard but getting tired, they did what so often happens and carried the ball too long instead of making quick passes and St Albans were able to tackle hard and keep our girls out of their D.

They managed to keep the opposition from scoring again with some excellent last ditch tackling holding the result at 1-1 at full time. A special mention goes to our Goalkeeper Eva who was the coaches player of the match. When called up she may brilliant saves but also she intelligently cleared the ball out wide along the base line ensure it was safe and away from dangers.

Well done girls it was a really impressive performance, probably the best to date. We have a break from matches until the new year so enjoy a break.
