Girls U14s win a nail-biter on shuffles to take the title

The Ipswich Hockey Club U14 Girls travelled to the Nottingham Hockey Centre on Sunday to compete in the National Final of the Tier 2 Knockout Cup, facing a formidable Rugby & East Warwickshire side.

As the team stepped onto the pitch, the heavens quite literally opened—hail pouring down as the match began. It set the tone for what would be a fierce and uncompromising contest. The opposition, undoubtedly the strongest the Ipswich girls had faced all season, were physically imposing and brought intensity from the first whistle. This would be a true test of character.

The first half was a tightly contested battle. Both teams demonstrated exceptional defensive organisation, cancelling each other out and refusing to give an inch. Ipswich matched their opponents’ physicality with determination and resilience, but just before the break, Rugby & East Warwickshire found a breakthrough—an excellent strike finding the inside of the right post to give them a 1–0 lead.

At half time, coaches Peter Wright and Pete Bale delivered a simple but powerful message: trust the process, trust each other. This was a team that had scored goals for fun all season—they just needed to believe the moment would come.

Roared on by a passionate Ipswich crowd, the girls returned to the pitch with renewed belief. As if on cue, the rain eased, heads lifted, and the fightback began.

The second half was relentless—end-to-end, physical, and full of determination. Ipswich’s defence stood tall under pressure, while the midfield and forwards drove forward with increasing intent. Then came the opportunity: a penalty corner.

The injection took a deflection and bobbled awkwardly, but Millie reacted brilliantly, collecting the loose ball and feeding it back into the circle. Nona, alert and composed, struck it first time—driving the ball just beneath the backboard and into the goal.

1–1. Game on.

The roar from players and supporters alike was deafening. Neither side could find a winner in normal time, and so the final would be decided by the dreaded shuffles.

Five brave Ipswich players stepped forward. Annabel calmly converted the first, but the opposition goalkeeper proved formidable, saving the next three attempts. Thankfully, Ipswich’s own goalkeeper, Eva, was nothing short of outstanding—matching save for save to keep hopes alive.

With the scores level, it all came down to the final shuffle. Jazzie stepped up. Cool under pressure, she moved wide right, drew the keeper out, and calmly slotted the ball into the corner.

Advantage Ipswich.

One final effort remained for the opposition. Their player drove hard to Eva’s left and unleashed a powerful shot destined for the top corner—but Eva produced a moment of brilliance, saving and immediately clearing the ball safely away to deny any rebound.

The whistle blew. What followed was pure joy—players sprinting across the pitch, arms raised, united in celebration.

Ipswich Hockey Club U14 Girls: National Champions.

This victory is a testament to an extraordinary group of players who have grown together over the past three years. Their commitment has been unwavering—rarely missing games, always supporting one another, and even adjusting holiday plans to be part of this journey.

A special mention goes to Sophie, who was unable to attend, and to Sofia, who stepped up from the U12s and delivered a remarkable performance in her place.

The support from parents, siblings, and grandparents was phenomenal throughout, truly acting as a 12th player and providing the energy that carried the team through the toughest moments.

This triumph also reflects the strength and depth being built within the club. Fielding two U14 teams this season has laid strong foundations, and with many players returning next year alongside exciting talent progressing from the U12s, the future is incredibly bright.

Finally, huge thanks must go to coaches Peter Wright and Pete Bale. Their dedication, guidance, and belief over the past two years have been instrumental, not only in this historic win, but in shaping this talented and united group
