National Conference
East league leaders Ipswich stretched their unbeaten run to 6 games and once
more kept a clean sheet as they outplayed and outclassed a hard working
Northampton Saints team.
Ipswich ran out 6-0
winners and more pleasing than the result was the manner of victory which
saw the Suffolk side get back to playing some great team hockey.
Missing coach James
Kingstone, who had National League playing commitments, Ipswich could have
been forgiven for feeling nervous but assistant coach Kirsten Spencer
ensured that the build up was consistent and the Team responded with one of
the best performances of the season so far.
The game could not
have started better with co-captain Emma Millar scoring her first goal of
the season on the 6th minute. A great run down the right by
Millie McWhirter saw her slip the ball to Millar on the far post and she
made no mistake rifling the ball in over the keeper.
4 minutes later Ipswich were 2-0 up Charlie Anderson scoring her
first ever National League goal from a short corner strike.
The home side were
now in total control and on the 19th minute Jess Bloom got a
deserved goal after some tremendous work down the left hand side of the
pitch.
Ipswich then saw a
further chance by Mille McWhirter cleared off the line as Northampton
struggled to contain the home side.
With half time
approaching Millar struck again first to react to a good save at a short
corner she rammed the ball home to score her second goal of the game and her
20th National League goal for Ipswich.
4-0 up at half time
the home team could have taken their foot of the gas but this side are
determined to keep improving and they once more concentrated on playing some
good team hockey.
With Northampton
chasing shadows, Ipswich extended their lead to 5-0 on the 43rd
minute. Anni Broster scoring her first National League goal with a good
reverse stick finish.
On the 60th
minute Jess Bloom wrapped it up with her second of the game, deflecting in a
shot on the far post.
It was a satisfying
and impressive performance by Ipswich but they are aware that tougher
challenges lie ahead. Because of a break in the National league fixtures next
weekend the Suffolk side will have
to wait until the 6th November to continue their quest for the
league title away against 5th placed Horsham.
