Ipswich

EHL
Cup Round 5
Result
won 5-1
BTexact Ipswich travelled to Worcester to defend the English Hockey Cup. On
the back of two defeats the Suffolk side knew that they had to start performing to their potential.
Strong words from coach Sandie Lister had put the team in an attacking frame
of mind and the Worcester team were backpedalling from the opening whistle.
King and Barnard took the game by the scruff of the neck and it was only a
few minutes before Ipswich took the lead. Ellis struck the ball fiercely
past the Worcester keeper.
Continued pressure led to the first of many short corner, Ellis again getting involved and after the initial shot was saved she made sure of
getting to the ball first and this time flicked the ball into the corner.
Ipswich were back to their best and the flowing style of hockey made it difficult for Worcester to get the ball. Kenny and Sheldrake combined well
as a strike force and showed greater confidence and composure on the ball in
the attacking zone. Vicki Sandal, Colleen Adcock and Leisa King dominated
the midfield and kept switching the angle of the Ipswich attack to create
further opportunities. Two more short corner goals from captain Kirsten Spencer made the score 4-0 at the break.
Worcester persevered and when the Suffolk side lost possession in the second
half they capitalised on the error and to the cheers of the crowd scored a
goal. Yet with new forwards Emma Millar and Lucy Philp Ipswich continued to
press forwards and eventually Aldous made it five with a reverse tap past
the wrong-footed keeper.
Ipswich were a different team to last week and they played a passing game
and were very quick at transforming defence into attack.
