Ipswich v Trojans

Won 4-2 ( M Sharp (2), L Aldous, L King)

Ipswich surged back to the top of the Premier 1 League on Sunday after beating Trojans 4-2 on Saturday and then hammering local rivals Harleston Magpies 5-0 on Sunday.

Missing 2 of their experienced attackers, including on Sunday their leading goal scorer Cathy Gilliat-Smith, the home side could have been forgiven for wondering where their goals where going to come from.   2 strikes from Leisa King was probably no big surprise but the story of the weekend has to be 2 goals on Saturday from the versatile Millie Sharp and 3 goals over both games from Right defender turned forward Lizzy Aldous.

Saturday saw relegation battlers Trojans travel to Suffolk but the home side were under no illusions this was going to be a easy game and they started the game with a determination to take an early lead.  For the first 15 minutes Ipswich attacked at will, however despite the opportunities the majority of shots were off target and the home sides frustration began to mount.  Despite the lack of clinical finishing Ipswich kept creating chances and Millie Sharp finally broke the deadlock on the 23rd minute. Pouncing on a rebound from a Leisa King shot to score her first goal of the season. The home side now sensed more goals and in the 28th Minute it was right defender turned striker Lizzy Aldous who calmly flicked the ball into the top left hand corner to also score her first goal of the season.  Ipswich were now controlling the game but a moment of superb individual skill from Trojans England striker Alex Danson reminded the home side that the game was not won yet. A mazy run from the 25 yard line was followed by a world class reverse stick strike into the top right hand corner to make it 2-1 on the stroke of half time.

Ipswich coaches Nick Thompson and Sandie Lister used half time to remind their side what needed to be done and the home side responded within 5 minutes. Sharp scoring her second of the game from the far post after a deflection from Emma Millar had evaded the keeper. 8 minutes later Leisa King showed her class with a unstoppable shot from the right hand side of the circle to make it 4-1.  Trojans did claim another goal  through Nadine Devereux on the 64 minute to make it 4-2 but the result and the 3 points never looked in doubt.

Ipswich v Harleston Magpies

Won 5-0 ( L Aldous (2), L King, E Millar, V Roberts)

Ipswich knew Sunday was a huge game for both sides. Harleston having been hammered 4-1 the previous day by visitors Doncaster knew that they needed to get something out of this game to keep them out of the relegation play-offs, while Ipswich knew a win would send them back to the top of the table.

As in their first meeting Harleston started strongly but Ipswich too were keen to apply some early pressure and for the first 10 minutes the game was keenly contested. The visitors did create several good chances but just did not have the composure to make a telling shot. Ipswich though stepped up their game and a superb goal in the 13th minute by Lizzy Aldous, in a move that she set up and then finished,  set the tone for the rest of the game. Aldous firstly closed down the Harleston defender, forcing the ball into the path of fellow striker Emma Millar who in turn fed the ball back to Aldous. A great dummy beat the keeper and a cool finish evaded the player on the line to make it 1-0.

Harleston seemed visibly drained by the goal and it was only 6 minutes later that Leisa King, in front of the watching England Coach Danny Kerry, scored her second of the weekend to make it 2-0. Given too much space in the circle King fired in a bullet like cross that evaded everyone including the keeper and ended up in the back of the goal.

Harleston to their credit dug in and tried to create chances but the Ipswich defence stood firm and with Charlie Anderson and Isabelle Sheldrake in particular having outstanding games the visitors never really got the chance to threaten the Ipswich goal.

The second half saw Ipswich's superior fitness come into play and 4 minutes after the re-start Lizzy Aldous scored her second of the game and her 3rd of the weekend. Some  great build up play by Anderson and Captain Vic Sandall down the left saw Aldous through on goal. The Harleston keeper saved well several times from the near post but Aldous was not to be denied and finally forced the ball home from the tightest of angles.

6 minutes later it was Millar's turn to add to the goals as she deflected in a fierce shot by Sandall to make it 4-0. Harleston were now throwing caution to the wind and did indeed create several one on one chances, but Ipswich Keeper Beccy Duggan is in fine form and dealt with any danger.

Ipswich though had one last goal to find if they were to fulfill their targets and that came on the 62nd minute courtesy of 18 year old Vanessa Roberts.  Roberts collected the ball superbly and her cool finish was fitting for the final goal in a match well won by the home team.

The win saw Ipswich move back to the top of the table, one point ahead of 2nd placed Leicester . A great weekend for the team and one that shows the depth of talent and the team spirit in this Ipswich squad.  Scoring 9 field goals in a weekend is impressive in it's own right, to do so without your 2 top goal scorers is a credit to the whole squad and support team.

Next weekend Ipswich travel away to Doncaster and know that they will be in for a tough test against a side fighting hard for Premiership survival, but Ipswich are on a 11 game unbeaten run and will be tough to stop.

Sudbury  v Ipswich 3's

Lost 3-1 ( V Dixon)

After a weeks rest Ipswich 3's knew they would have a difficult task this weekend, facing Sudbury away, who are top of the league. With only two more games left to play this season, Sudbury knew that beating Ipswich would win them the league title.

The game started with pace with Ipswich having first push back. Sudbury were finding it hard to break through Ipswich’s tough defence, something they had not expected. Ipswich battled well against the confident and experienced Sudbury side and attacked and defended convincingly. However after 20 minutes Ipswich's pace eased and allowed Sudbury more time on the ball, which they used to their benefit, resulting in a goal for the home side. As the first half drew to a conclusion, Ipswich fought for every ball but again let the strong Sudbury forwards get the better of them. At half time the score was 2-0 to Sudbury.

The second half started in the same fashion as the first half had finished, Sudbury with most of the procession, but Ipswich battling back hard. Sudbury scored again: unfortunately beating Mary Ost, the Ipswich keeper, as the ball was scooped over her head and into the net.

Sudbury sensed victory and eased the pace, but characteristically the Ipswich spirit held firm and they rebuilt their game running together confident passing play. Ipswich surged forward and won a short corner. Vicky Dixon scored the consolation goal for Ipswich with a powerful and decisive strike from the top of the D. Ipswich were buoyed by this play and finished the game still attacking and dominating the possession.

Ipswich were back on form this week and can hopefully finish the season on a high, the race for promotion is still open and a place is still within Ipswich’s reach. Congratulations are due to Sudbury who took the league title through this well deserved win.
