EHL Conference East

Sevenoaks v Ipswich

Result: Won 3-0

Scorers :L Aldous, C Hunnable, M McWhirter

This was a game of first’s for Ipswich Women. Their first away game, their first clean sheet, the first National League goal for Mille McWhirter and the first time Ipswich have topped the National Conference East.

After a good win over Chelmsford last weekend, Ipswich arrived in Kent full of confidence and despite the home teams 100% start to the season the Suffolk side knew that if they played their team hockey then they stood an excellent chance of coming home with the 3 points.

After a steady but bitty start by Ipswich they finally started to dominate the game, with Issy Sheldrake and Ness Roberts in particular having good games in midfield.

With gaps opening up Ipswich started to ask questions of the Sevenoaks defence and after a few good break aways the visitors opened the scoring on the 25th minute. Chloe Hunnable scoring her second goal in as many weeks with a super strike that left the keeper no chance.

Sevenoaks though stuck to their task and a short corner saw Ipswich goalkeeper Fiona Stacy called into action but a great double save saw her frustrate the home side and they entered half time still 1-0 down.

Ipswich knew there was more to come and as they started to move the ball around they created more and more gaps in the home teams structure, Lizzy Aldous and Charlie Anderson in particular capitalising on their  pace and close skills to ease past the Sevenoaks press.

On the 47th minute Ipswich took a 2-0 lead. A short corner saw Captain Emma Millar’s deflected shot stopped illegally on the line by a Sevenoaks player and Aldous stepped up to convert the awarded penalty stroke.  It took Aldous to 3 goals in 2 games and sees her become Ipswich’s and the league’s top scorer so far this season.

Sevenoaks now looked like a beaten side and Ipswich played some fantastic team hockey, moving the ball with confidence and speed.

Then on the 58th minute, Ipswich striker Millie McWhirter ,who turned 18th during the week, celebrated her birthday in style rifling in an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner after some great build up play by Jess Bloom to make it 3-0.  It was McWhirter’s first but surely not her last National League goal and it sealed a fantastic performance by the Suffolk club.

The win also saw Ipswich move to the top of the table, after leaders Horsham lost to Chelmsford.

The Suffolk side face Southgate next weekend at home and will be looking to continue their good run of form.

City of Peterborough v Ipswich

Result: Won 5-1

Scorers: V Sandal, C McWhirter, H Tallent, A Hanman, J Gray

Following a pattern that is becoming a little too familiar Ipswich went 1-0 down within the first 5 minutes. After the first 15 minutes Ipswich finally settled into the game and began to play their hockey, with Vic Sandall dribbling past half the Peterborough team to slot a reverse stick undercut shot clearly into the back of the net. Ipswich began to dominate possession with some great attacking movement feeding the ball into the 'D' to Jo Gray who passed it to the far post to Charlotte McWhirter who slapped it against the back board. Half-time score: 2-1 to Ipswich.

In the second half Ipswich continued to overturn possession well in defence and move play forward to pressurise the Peterborough 'D'. Midfielder Hannah Tallent ran far post to reverse stick volley a deflection off the keeper's pads into the roof of the net. Ipswich increased their lead further when Ariane Hanman dribbled into the 'D' and slotted the ball past the Peterborough keeper. This was followed by increased pressure in attack from Charlotte McWhirter and Katherine Wood, but when the ball crossed the goal line the umpire gave a long corner saying he had not seen an Ipswich player touch the ball in the 'D' and depriving Wood of a well deserved goal in her debut match for the club. Ipswich Captain Jo Gray scored the final goal of the game having driven into the 'D' drawn the keeper wide and struck the ball into the far corner. Full-time score: 5-1 to Ipswich who continue to sit at top of the league with 9 points and +10 goal difference. Man of the Match was awarded to Mitch Chidgney and Personal best to Ariane Hanman.

 National Second Team Cup Competition

 Sevenoaks 2s v Ipswich Women's 2s

Lost Result 4-3

Having reached the final of this competition last season Ipswich were frustrated to go 1-0 down early on, but once they found their groove began to distribute the ball well and Fiona Lane picked up a rebound off the Sevenoaks keeper and calmly flicked it over her into the net bringing Ipswich back into the game. Shortly afterwards Ipswich were brought into the lead with a fantastic effort from Anni Broster, but this was not for long as a poor umpiring decision allowed Sevenoaks a second chance at a short corner which they converted, bringing the score line back to 2-2.

Ipswich continued to battle in the second half despite some individuals playing out of position due to injuries in the squad. Ipswich played the better hockey, utilising the switch across the back well at times and breaking down play in midfield, however Sevenoaks continued to look dangerous in attack. Ipswich's efforts were rewarded with several penalty corners and a third goal scored by Hannah Brooks, however this was quickly followed by an equaliser from Sevenoaks. Full-time score: 3-3. Ipswich entered Golden Goal determined to score the winning goal they deserved, but despite winning a series of penalty corners possession was overturned and Sevenoaks slipped the ball over the Ipswich goal line. Final score: 4-3 to Sevenoaks, with a disappointed Ipswich squad now headed for the plate.

Dereham v Ipswich

Result: Won 4-3

Scorers: K Dixon, M Stackpoole

After a winning start to the season, against Bishops Stortford, Ipswich had a long away trip to take on.  With Ivan Smith succumbing to injury and following Ed Driver on to the treatment table and Andy Cook unavailable due to work commitments the squad is being stretched to its limits, with only the bare eleven making the trip.

The game started off with both teams struggling to retain possession on a very bouncy pitch that can, at best, be described as woeful. When Ipswich were able to knock the ball about they were on top in the game and this eventually led to a short corner in the 12th minute. Keir Dixon unleashed from the short corner and the goalkeeper made a save which he knew very little about, it was clear he was going to struggle.

Max Underwood was causing chaos in the Dereham defence with his Aerial passes from left back and a couple of minutes after the first short corner another came from a lofted through ball to Rich Stainthorpe, who was featuring against his old club. Stainthorpe picked up the ball and drove into the left of the D finding a Defenders foot after beating 2 players. This time Dixon was more accurate and keeper didn’t move. He was definitely struggling. 1-0.

This seemed to buoy the Ipswich players and 5 minutes later a crashed through ball from defence went past the whole Dereham defence and Dixon was onto it. The defence were left trailing as he took it from half way to the D unchallenged and then stroked the ball into the goal. 2-0.

At the stage it looked as though one more goal from Ipswich would be enough to kill off Dereham but some poor marking allowed the Dereham defence to play the ball out to their right midfielder and he took the ball past 3 of 4 defenders before striking a reverse stick shot into the roof of the net from 5 yards, leaving Glading in goal with no chance.

Dixon completed his hat trick just before half time with another short corner. Dereham were struggling to cope with a very slick Ipswich routine.

After half time Dereham came out looking to try and get a foothold back in the game. This happened 5 mins after the restart when their right winger drove into the D and was unceremoniously hacked at by the Ipswich defence. The umpire immediately blew his whistle and gave a penalty stroke. Glading picked the right direction but the flick was accurate and beat him for pace.

The game then became a little more heated and Dereham had a player sent to the sin bin for a foul on centre back Shyam Patel. This should have given Ipswich the upper hand but the 2 teams seemed to cancel each other out. Mark Stackpoole used his intuition for this part of the game and reserved his energy by standing in the opposition half exchanging pleasantries with the defence. This tactic paid off when a ball broke to him and he mis-controlled the ball past one defender, played a one-two with the next defender and slipped the ball in the keepers near post. This should have been enough for Ipswich to relax a little more at 4-2.

Dereham rallied and managed to get another one back with another shot rifling into the roof of the net. The last 10 mintues were filled with frantic hockey and some bad tempered exchanges. This came to a head when captain Geoff Reed attempted a tackle that went badly wrong and the opposition player reacted by hitting the ball at Reed from point blank range. It took a slight deflection off his knee cap and he was down. The umpires made sure that Reed was ok, and then sent him to the sin-bin. But, as the Dereham player found out: there is only one punishment for violent conduct. The rest of his team protested his innocence but the as the umpires delivered the red card the player walked off knowing that it was a fair decision.

Ipswich managed to see out the rest of the game with Max Underwoodwinning his second man of the match award for his solid defensive efforts. He was ably assisted by the rest of the defence and Mark Wrinch upped his game to offer some protection for the last part of the match. At the final whistle the Dereham goalkeeper decided to complete his outstanding performance by receiving the second red card for telling the umpires what he thought of them.

A pleasing 3 points for Ipswich who now head the table as the only team with 2 wins from 2 games.

Cup round 2

Holcombe  v Ipswich

Result: Lost 8-1

Scorers: J Godfrey

Ipswich again only had 11 players available to make the away trip to Kent. Max Underwood and Matt Richardson stepped up from the 2nd team after impressing in the last round win against Wapping.

Unfortunately Ipswich were soon to play with 10 for the rest of the game as a ball driven into the Holcombe D flew up off a stick and hit Mark Stackpoole in the face. He was taken off to hospital to have stitches put into a wound on his chin. With Holcombe having a full squad of experienced players, including a couple of former internationals, and home advantage the job had just become a lot harder for Ipswich!

At half time Holcombe had only managed to put 3 goals past Ipswich. It had been a half in which Ipswich had broken down the opposition attacks well and when Holcombe had got into the Ipswich D Ben Glading had made a number of good saves. The extra man was counting against Ipswich though and, despite Richard Stainthorpe's tireless running up front, they had a lot of time to pick their passes from the back. Geoff Reed and Mark Wrinch were showing signs that they may be finding some form with impressive displays in the middle of the pitch and the defence was working well as a unit.

The second half brought more of the same but there were 2 highlights from an Ipswich perspective both coming from solo runs by Josh Godfrey. In the first instance he picked up the ball on the right in the Ipswich 25, ran the length of the pitch and along the baseline to the goal before anyone could take the ball from him. The second ended with the only Ipswich goal of the game as he picked up the ball on the half way line and sprinted at the Holcombe defence, he beat every defender in his way and calmly put the ball under the keeper to finish off the impressive run.

As the game went on Holcombe fresh legs paid off and they created a lot of chances. The game eventually finished 8-1 but the way Ipswich played in difficult circumstances was a credit to the club.  There were a lot of positives to take from the game as Holcombe are a national league side who we played last year and lost 6-1 with a full strength squad. The experience will be good for the younger players as they look to make their transition into the first team.

Over 50's

Ipswich v Bedford

Won 11-0

Scorers:Glading 5 Sampson R 2, Sampson P, Wake Wrinch

Ipswich over 50s moved convincingly into the second round with an emphatic win over Bedford. Whilst an even encounter was expected Ipswich superior patterns of play proved decisive as they they ripped through the visitors defense and once Glading had turned in Sampsons misdirected shot the result was rarely in doubt. Sampson converted from the top of the circle before Wrinch playing on the unfamiliar left wing slammed home after Glading's effort had been saved. Glading and Sampson both converted from open play to set themselves up for hat tricks to give Ipswich a 5 - 0 half time lead.

The visitors had little to counter the Ipswich midfield and Steward in goal was only rarely called into action, and Ipswich added goals at regular intervals, as Wake and Phil Sampson got their names on the score sheet and Glading scored a quick fire 3, and should have converted again when firing wide from Hauxwell's perfect pass.

We now look forward to an away trip to Holcombe on 1 November in the second round.
