Suffolk go close but cannot clear final hurdle

Suffolk Men lost out 5-1 in the County Championships B Division semi-final to eventual winners Staffordshire  . However it has been a more than successful campaign as the team are promoted back into the A division for next season.

The U21 team also did remarkably well, they made the final with ease only to lose 9-0 to a rampant Lancashire team.

Well done to all involved.

England Ladies lead test series 2-0

With 2 wins out of 2 against South Africa, England enter their 3rd test looking for the win that would clinch the series.

England won the first game at a canter dispatching their host's 4-1. The 2nd game however saw South Africa put up a much sterner test and England could only muster a 2-1 victory. The game became rather physical at points with SA's Kotze and Webber and England's Sarah Blanks all getting sent off in a 3 minute spell. Ironically the South African's sent off have played for Ipswich and Canterbury respectively in the National league this season.

Ipswich's player of the year Leisa King bagged her first goal in the 2-1victory and will be looking for more over the next two games.

1st team player of the year fly's out for African Challenge

Jo Ellis picked up the Ipswich 1st Team player of the year award on Friday night, rounding of an amazing 12 month's for the girl from Cambridge. It was the first time 21 year old Ellis had received the award but it should come as no surprise considering  that she was the first Ipswich Junior to win Young player of the year over 3 consecutive seasons. In fact it was only last year that Ellis was receiving the Junior award and it shows how far she has developed in those 12 months. She is now a regular in the England senior training squad, has a Commonwealth silver medal to her name and is pushing hard for a place in the GB squad.

Ellis fly's out to South Africa this week with the rest of the England party knowing that a good display here could well seal her place in the European squad.  Good luck Jo.

King plays part as GB earn draw against South Africa

GB Women played South Africa in a one off test over the weekend and came away with a 202 draw. Olton's Helen Grant scored both GB goals and according to sources GB were unlucky not to get all 3 points. Ipswich's Leisa King, voted Ladies overall Player of the year at the Club dinner, will stay out in South Africa as she meets up with the England squad who will play a 3 game series against their hosts.

AGM news

With another season over thoughts and action turn to the 03-04 season and especially the vital committee roles that play such a large part in keeping our club ticking over.

Chairman Nick Bignell stood down after a long and hard season as agreed and was replaced by Ipswich Ladies stalwart Judy Wright. Judy led the Ladies for many years and has all the right credentials to keep the merged club moving forward.

Vice-Chair Claire Webb also stood down, again as agreed and Vickey Dixon was voted in as her replacement. Ex-GB player Vickey, who now plays for the 3rd team has a wealth of International experience and will be a welcome new face to the committee. ( Please see table below for full listings of new committee.)

The prospect of a gold card membership scheme (to reduce paying costs) was also discussed and despite some reservations the idea looks like a good way forward. The newly formed committee will be meeting in July to sort out a final proposal and hopefully can get something out to members in time for the new season in September.

King goes on GB trip

1st team player Leisa King has been selected as part of the GB Squad that will tour South Africa. king will spend 1 week playing test's against the hosts before then spending the next 2 weeks as part of the England Squad, also due to play South Africa.

This is one step on the long road towards an Olympic dream for Leisa and she will be looking to give performances that make leaving her out virtually impossible.

Ipswich's other England player Jo Ellis was not selected as part of the GB squad but this does not mean her Olympic dream is over either. The squad is a real mixture of experience and future talent and Ellis along with other players not making the trip is still very much in the frame for selection.
