Hall goes close

The Women 1's star striker Jenny Hall just missed out on the title of 2007 Higgins Group Youth Winner. The title was won by Sophie Bray but Hall was a worthy runner up with the judges highlighting how close it was  "As usual the judges had a hard task to separate the candidates who came from a wide background of hockey development. The girls’ runner-up was Jenny Hall, now of Ipswich, who has been knocking at the door all three years that the award has been made. Again, it was a hairline decision."

Congratulations to Jenny and the club will be looking forward to seeing her back in action next weekend as she returns to league hockey after breaking her thumb in November last year.

Men re-start league with real test

The Men's 1's get back into league action for the first time since 25th November with two home games. On Saturday they take on current league leaders Exeter University. The students beat Ipswich 8-2 at the start of the season so it will be a tough game for the Suffolk team.  Sunday sees Ipswich welcome 10th placed Robinsons who occupy the relegation play-off spot. With Ipswich a comforting 8 points clear of the drop a win here is vital should they want to continue their climb up the table. Ipswich won the last encounter Bristol 4-3.  The Men's 2's  play Havering who sit only 1 point behind them in the league but with a 6-1 win for the Suffolk team in the last meeting, the 2's will want another win. The second placed 3's play a Derby game against IES, who are 14 points behind them. Ipswich won the last game 2-1.  The 4's will be looking forward to getting back into action against lowly Holt Harlequins, a  14-0 win for Ipswich last times bodes well for 3 points. The  5's play North Walsham 3's, who they beat 1-0 last time round.  The Vets play Shefford and Sandy. This is a top two battle that Ipswich will want to win to increase their lead the at the top to 7 points.  The Boys U15 team travel to Harleston for a second round Cup game. Ipswich won 8-0 in the last round but Harleston won 23-0..a good game should be on the cards.

The Women 1's have a training session as they adjust to life back outdoors and prepare for next weeks game against Canterbury.  The Women 2's will be flying high after last weeks good win over Sudbury and this time travel to take on Bury St Edmunds. Ipswich narrowly lost 2-1 in the last game but are able to field a strong squad for this game so will want another 3 points to keep them climbing to safety. In fact should Ipswich win and other results go to form the Suffolk side could be out of the "official" relegation spots.  The 3's also face a Bury team in the shape of the 2's. Ipswich won the last meeting 2-1. The 4's are stuck in a rut and will have to play very well to get anything form the game v leaders Haverhill. The 5's play Lowestoft 3's and will battling hard for a win.

Women suffer semi-final heartache again

The Women 1's again went so close to making the finals of the Indoor Tournament but even a superb second half fight back from 6-1 down to draw level at 6-6 was not enough as they lost 7-6, with Bowdon Hightown scoring the winner with 2 minutes to go. It was heartbreaking for the Suffolk side but a poor first half was to cost them in the end. A huge thank you to all the teams supporters you came along to cheer them on, especially Toby Lever who did a great job as Seve the lion.

The Women 2's though will be a happy team this morning as they reflect on a super display to thrash 2nd placed Sudbury 5-2. RHS pupil Beth Golding grabbing a super hat-trick The win sees Ipswich move off the bottom of the table  The 3's though did not fair so well losing to Sudbury 2's 2-1 but they were missing several key players who were playing for Ipswich School at the Indoor finals. The 4's lost again this time 4-2 to Grasshoppers. The 5's did not have a game.

The Men's 1's did not have a game.   The Men's 2's  drew 3-3 with 2nd placed St Albans, a result that probably knocked the Hertfordshire team out of the running for the league title. The 3's beat Sudbury 3-2 to see them stay in a promotion spot. The 4's opposition Pelican 3's conceded so Ipswich gain a 3-0 win to keep them top of the table.  The  5's beat Norwich city 5's 6-5 to keep them top of the table. The Vets had a well deserved weekend off.

The winners will face either Slough or Olton in the final at 18.00.  Sky Sports 3 will cover the event from 16.30 to 20.30.

Vic Sandall takes on Sevenoaks defender

The Women 2's will be keen to notch another win on Saturday but face a tough task as they welcome 2nd placed Sudbury to Tuddenham Road. The 3's face Sudbury 2's and also will want the 3 points to keep them in 3rd place. The 4's need to get back to winning ways and will hope to do so against Grasshoppers. The 5's do not have a game.

The Men's 1's do not have a game.   The Men's 2's  will want to bounce back this Saturday but welcome 2nd placed St Albans so know they will need to step up their play.. The 3's face Sudbury away and will be looking to maintain their winning run. The 4's opposition Pelican 3's have conceded so Ipswich gain a 3-0 win to keep them top of the table.  The  5's face Norwich city 5's and will be wanting another high scoring win. The Vets have a well deserved weekend off.

Men's 1's warm up with a victory, as Women 2's fight for survival.

The Men's 1's  started to step up their preparations for the resumption of the Slazenger EHL at the beginning of March and will be very happy with a 5-2 win over a Chelmsford side that is 1 division above them.   The Men's 2's  will not be happy with a 7-1 drubbing by Cambridge City and will look to get back to winning ways next week. The 3's remain on course for promotion with a 2-1 win over Cambridge City 3's. City beat Ipswich at the start of the season so it was a good win for the Ipswich team. The 4's also won a 2-0 victory over Lowestoft Railway to keep them top of the NE14HOCKEY Div 4NE Table.  The  5's hammered in 12 goals with only 1 reply against Sudbury 4's and they too top their league table.. The Vets continued their 2008 winning streak with a 3-0 win over City of Peterborough.

The Women 2's recorded a fine 4-1 win over Tunbridge Wells in the NE14Hockey East Premier League  and have given themselves a real chance of escaping the dread drop. The 3's continue to impress and recorded a 6-2 thrashing of local rivals Hadleigh. The 4's though slumped to a 5-1 loss to Harwich with the 5's recording a horrid 9-0 loss to Grasshoppers 2's.

It will be our last long haul trip prior to the Beijing Games in August ensuring we do not over fatigue ourselves with travel in the immediate months running up to the Games. With five test matches against Australia we will have all areas of our play put under the microscope and it will further arm us with the information we need to develop in the remaining part of our preparations.”

Women 1's make it 4 out of 4, but 2's suffer heartache.

The Women 1's put in a tremendous display to register 3 wins out of 4 and seal a 4th consecutive appearance at finals day at the NIA.  They beat Olton 5-4, Canterbury 2-1, lost a close game 4-2 to Slough and then finished off with a 4-1 win over Sutton.  Ipswich now play Bowdon Hightown on Sunday 27th January at 14.20 for a place in the final (18.00). The winners of  that game will face either Slough or Olton for a place in Europe.  The event is to be shown LIVE on SKY SPORTS 3 16.30 to 20.30.

The 2008 National Finals Squad

Back Row, Left to right: R waters (Coach) K Spencer, J Bloom, E Millar, C Lee-Smith, D Mills (Manager)

Front Row, Left to Right: L King, M Fabregas, V Sandall, E Lee-Smith, L Aldous, M Sharp, Baker (Cpt),

The Women 2's had a bad weekend losing 1-0 to Chelmsford in the NE14Hockey East Premier League  before losing 3-1 to Loughborough Students in the semi-final of the 2nd team Cup. Ipswich were defending Champions so it will have hurt them to lose their crown but the team played very well and now can concentrate on fighting for survival in the Premier League. The 3's drew 2-2 with Cambridge City 2's. The 4's lost 3-1 against IES 2's. The 5's lost 3-0 to IES 4's.

The Men's 2's  travelled to Sheffield Hallam on Sunday for the 2nd team Cup semi-final game but lost out 4-3 in a exciting game. Fielding a lot of 3's and 4's players Ipswich out up a great fight in the second half and can be proud of a good run in their first season.. The 3's played a re-arranged game against Cambridge City 4's and won 9-0 to cement them in 2nd place in the league. The 4's played Sudbury 2's with the 5's also paying a friendly against Carnes 2's. The Vets beat Norwich Exiles 5-0 to stay top of the tree.

10th January 08
Women 1's target Indoor finals as 2's face Semi-final cup games.

The Women 1's start 2008 with the clear target of a fourth consecutive appearance at Indoor Finals Day. With only the top 4 teams going through Ipswich know they will need at least 2 wins out of their 4 games this weekend to qualify for the biggest domestic event in the hockey year.  First up is 3rd placed Olton and Ipswich will need to be on top form to make sure of the win. The second game is against a struggling Canterbury but there are no easy games in this league and it will no doubt be a close game.  Sunday sees Ipswich face defending Champions Slough and if results have gone their way a win here could see them qualifying. The final game is against a Sutton Coldfield team that have yet to register a point but with them battling hard to avoid relegation and Ipswich possibly needing the win this could be a very tense game. The Women 2's also face a tense weekend. On Saturday they travel to Chelmsford in the NE14Hockey East Premier League and with the 2's still in the relegation zone and 4 points from safety they need a win. The meeting before Christmas saw a 1-1 draw so this is likely to be a tight game. Sunday sees the 2's welcome Loughborough Students to Tuddenham Road for the semi-final of the 2nd team Cup. Ipswich are defending Champions and will not give up their title without a fight. The 3's also start their East League games and welcome Cambridge City 2's to Tuddenham Road, the 3's are still in with a fighting chance of promotion so a win here is vital. The 4's face a local derby game against 3rd placed IES 2's. The last meeting saw IES run out 8-2 winners so Ipswich will be keen for revenge. The 5's also face IES this time their 3's and with them also losing in the last meeting a win here would be a good sign of progression.

The highest Men's side in action this weekend is the 2's as they travel to Sheffield Hallam on Sunday for the 2nd team Cup semi-final game. This is Ipswich's first year entering this competition and it would be an amazing feat to reach the final. The 3's play a re-arranged league game away against Cambridge City 4's. The 4's play Sudbury 2's in a Friendly game with the 5's also paying a friendly against Carnes 2's. The Vets are in league action and will look to cement their place at the top of the East League with a win over Norwich Exiles

A massive weekend for the club and if things go to plan we could see 2 teams in Cup finals and the 1's through to the NIA Indoor Finals day.

Head Coach Danny Kerry is eager to begin what will be a busy 2008 which will culminate with the Olympic Games in August.  “We are looking forward to our short trip to Spain. We are only taking 18 members from the training squad of 24 and will be looking at some new combinations whilst giving some further experience to the younger members of the group”.
