England Women grab bronze and World Cup Qualifying spot.

England Women beat Spain 4-0 to claim third place in the 7th Women’s European Nations Championships that were held in Dublin last week.

Ipswich's Fantastic 4

Becky Duggan, Cathy Gilliat-Smith, Leisa King, Jo Ellis

After finishing 4th last time the team were rightly pleased with their Bronze medal, and their top 3 placing also ensures they will attend the World Cup Qualifiers being held in Rome in April 06.

After beating Ukraine 4-0 and Scotland 4-1 England finally came unstuck against Olympic Champions Germany, as they lost 1-0 to see the Germans top the group. It was a tough defeat to take as England outplayed the Germans for the majority of the game had 3 very good chances to level the match.  Facing eventual winners Holland in the semi-final was always going to be tough and the Dutch signalled their attacking intent early on with a barrage of aerial balls behind the England defence. Once taking an early lead the Dutch never looked in danger and ran out 2-0 victors.

The 3rd v 4th game saw England totally outplay Spain and the 4-0 score line was a satisfying way to end the tournament.

For Ipswich players Jo Ellis and Leisa King this was another England medal to add to their Commonwealth Silver’s won in Manchester in 2002, while for Becky Duggan and Cathy-Gilliat Smith this will hopefully be the first of many more medals to come.
