The squads for the 2008 GB Super League which kicks off this weekend at Cannock Hockey Club in Staffordshire have been released. This is only the second season this competition has been played and this year, the number of teams participating has been reduced from six to four. The tournament will conclude on 26-27 April at Peffermill in Edinburgh when the 2008 title will be decided.

Featuring 155 players, 35 team officials and 20 umpires and officials, the league offers the opportunity to spot the stars of the future as the players take to the field.

The oldest players of the tournament are Martin Jones and Cathy Gilliat-Smith, both of the Saxon Tigers, who bring a wealth of experience to their teams boasting 91 and 62 England Caps respectively. Martin also holds 20 GB Caps with Louise Munn of Scotland (Celtic Panthers) heading the girls tally with five GB caps. The average age of the players selected is just 20 years old

3's become 3rd Ipswich team to win promotion.

The Men's 1's lost 7-4 to Indian Gymkhana in their last league game. Despite the loss Ipswich have won a virtual promotion this season due to a league restructure and next year will be competing with teams that played their hockey this season in Div 1, such as local rivals Chelmsford and Old Loughtonians.  The  3's beat Felixstowe 6-3 and sealed their place in Div 1 for next season. The first 3's team in the East to play in Div 1. The Vets were playing Braintree.

Vets make History, 1's game is postponed and 4's and 5's are Champions

The Men's 1's game against Indian Gymkhana fell to the snow on Sunday and will be replayed this weekend. The Men's 2's lost 5-0 to Bedford. The  3's won 6-0 and need another point to win promotion. The 4's beat Dereham 3's 3-2 and with promotion and the league title. The already promoted  5's  thrashed IES 3's 9-2 and that was enough to see them crowned champions. The Vets were also crowned Champions, this time at Harleston Magpies as they won 6-2. On Sunday they then beat Plymouth Marjon 6-0 in the Vets over 35 Cup to secure a place in the final. Ironically they could meet Harleston in that final.. The Boys U15 lost 4-3  to Beeston for a Quarter final Cup tie in a close game.

The depleted Women 1's lost 9-2 Bowdon Hightown in their final game, highlighting how important last weeks point was. With Poynton beating Chelmsford it would have been Ipswich and not the Essex side in the relegation play-offs. The 5's lost 3-0 to Lowestoft 3's in a re-arranged game. The Vets were runners up in the East Regional round, after losing 1-0 to eventual winners Sevenoaks.

1's face tough last league games, as Men's 3's and 4's battle for promotion.

The Men's 1's secure in the knowledge that they will be playing in the National league next season travel to Indian Gymkhana for their last fixture.  A win for Ipswich coupled with Firebrands losing or drawing would see the team finish in 7th place. The Men's 2's play Bedford who are 2 places below them, a win could possibly see Ipswich finish in a very respectable 6th place. The  3's promotion chase is going to the wire, they have a game in hand over 2nd placed City of Peterborough but need at least 4 points from those 2 games. Saturday sees them play Cambridge City 4's . The 4's play Dereham 3's and know a win will guarantee them promotion and possible the title if Gorleston slip up. The already promoted  5's  play IES 3's but would need a high scoring win to secure the title .  The Vets have another huge weekend, playing Harleston Magpies on Saturday they know a win will secure them back to back East titles and then on Sunday they welcome Plymouth Marjon in the semi-finals of the Vets over 35 Cup. The Boys U15 also face a big game as they travel to Beeston for a Quarter final Cup tie.

The Women 1's  complete their season WHEN they travel to Bowdon Hightown to play the league runners up in their final game. They will take a small squad due to injuries but with no pressure on them the side are looking for a good performance. The 5's play Lowestoft 3's in a re-arranged game. The Vets travel to Cambridge to play in the East Regional round, hoping to win through to he National Finals.
