Ellis heads to Rome with England Squad

Following the match against Ireland on Sunday 9 April, Danny Kerry, England Women’s Head Coach, has now confirmed the squad to participate in the forthcoming World Cup Qualifier in Rome from 25 April – 6 May.

The squad is almost identical to the one that recently returned from the Melbourne Commonwealth Games with a Bronze medal but due to the fact that teams in the World Cup Qualifiers are allowed to take a squad of 18, as opposed to only 16 at the Commonwealth Games, there are 2 additional inclusions: Rachel Walker and Sally Walton; while Alex Scott replaces Charlotte Hartley.

Said Kerry “The ability to take 18 players to a major event, as opposed to only 16 for the Commonwealth Games, changes some of the selection issues and gives us increased flexibility in choice. Melbourne was a useful tournament and formed part of the preparation for the World Cup Qualifiers.  However, the Commonwealth Games is not a world ranking or Olympic qualification event and the World Cup Qualifiers are much more important for England as we are the nominated country on behalf of Great Britain in the qualification process to the Olympics.

Ipswich’s Jo Ellis is obviously delighted to have been selected and is looking forward to helping her Country Qualify for the World Cup that is due to take place in Madrid at the end of September.

Quiz of the century?

Over 60 people attended  the annual Quiz & Curry night held at Henley Road on Saturday. Thanks to James Wrinch for organising the night, the Men's 3's for running the Quiz and to Graham for the very tasty Curry.

I would congratulate the winners but seeing as that was the men's 3's I am sure you will agree it smells of a fix!

The gloating winning team sent in the report below.

Ipswich 3rd XI knew they were going to be facing an uphill battle when they arrived at the venue to find that they had to play the game on a wet garden table and bench.

After struggling in the first round the team transfer listed James Bouteill and were astonished when the ladies first XI took him on without even a compensatory payment.

As round followed round the team got well into their stride with double points being picked up in various rounds including the one written for all borough council staff about Ipswich past and present.

Young ben and david surprised their team mates and astonished mrs gladding by getting an english literature question right between them and then after that ben went back to texting one of the ladies fourth team and david also lost concentration.

Having outplayed the mens first team, largely as Alex couldn't stomach the thought of losing to Bealsey, the team got nervous with two rounds to go.

Thankfully gary is a whizz at all things IT and knew his https from his waps and dvds and alex as befits a man of his stature excelled on food and drink.

So despite the combined brain power of the lever family coming up on the rails the mens third XI held on to win the game by a point and collect the magnificent trophy.

As ben would have said if he had managed to string two words together in his acceptance speech ......... 'it was great night and the best team won in the end thanks to our illustrious captain actually completing the whole of a third eleven game for the first time all season."

1's finish 6th but slice of history goes to the 2's

The Men's 1's lost 4-2 to Oxford Hawks at home and will be disappointed to have finished a good first season back in National League with a loss. However the team can be proud of some great display's of hockey and the future looks bright for next year.

We wave a fond farewell to our Australian star Sam Tyler who is returning to his homeland this month. Unbelievably he has not been tempted to stay by the promise of a superb English summer!

The Men's 2's destroyed West Herts 5-1 to claim their place in Premier A next season. A superb display from the 2's and they thoroughly deserve their chance to battle it out against the East's top teams next season. The game v Harleston 1's is a fixture that is already catching the eye!.

The Women's 4's  v Grasshopper 2'ssaw them end 06 with a 2-0 win. The Women's Vet's won all 3 games beating Sevenoaks 2-0, St Albans, 6-0 and Colchester 6-0, to progress to the national finals for the first time in 5 years. The final is on 21st May.
