1st's throw it away as Club retain Suffolk Championship Title

The 1st team looked out of sorts as they took on in form Canterbury on Saturday in the first round of the Play-Offs. Cup winners Canterbury took advantage of Ipswich's rusty display to win 3-0 and move into a semi-final game against Olton, who had lost to Slough on penalties.

Ipswich did not play well as a team yet it was only personal errors that gave Canterbury the sight of goal.  It was a disappointing performance to end the season on especially as the team had worked so hard to be in the play-offs.

Overall however the season has been a great improvement, especially considering last season when they were at the wrong end of the table. 4th place is a good result for a side that brought in several new players and had on many occasions, due to injuries, to travel with only 12 fit players. Next season should see the rebuilding continue and hopefully the team can go one better.

The 2nd's took part in the Suffolk Club Championships and retained the trophy for the 3rd year in a row with a 9-2 victory over Haverhill.

Suffolk Club Champions 2003

Ipswich were by far the most experienced side there and were slightly disappointed that several other strong Suffolk Clubs had not entered. However the team thoroughly enjoyed the day and it was a fitting farewell to Jo Jo Anderson and Ella Kenny, both of whom are off to University in September and have played such a large part in the club's success this season.

The 4th's wrapped up tier league season with a 2-0 victory against Harwich on Saturday and with it got their second win of the season. It has been a sterling finish to the season for the 4th's and highlights their never say die attitude. In theory they are relegated but they may get a reprieve...watch this space!!

Finally the Vet's traveled to Harleston to bid for the East title but they just faltered in the final game and finished in 2nd place behind surprising winners St Albans.

So the season is finally finished for all teams, well done and roll on September 2003!!

Jo Ellis plays part in England's series win

Ipswich 1st team star Jo Ellis, played a large part in England's series win against Wales over the Easter weekend. Ellis already a  Commonwealth silver Medallist will be keen to prove a point after being dropped for the Champions Trophy in Australia last November. Ellis scored one goal in the final 7-1 thrashing of Wales and should be pleased with her overall performance. A place in the England squad for the European Cup is the first  aim and Jo looks on the right tracks.

Ladies 4th's get deserved win as 5th's end with a point.

The 4th's finally got the win they craved so badly against Felixstowe 1st's. A 1-0 win with the goal coming only seconds before the end saw Ipswich record their only win of the season. Many other sides would have already given up their season but the 4th's have stayed positive and worked so hard and this is just rewards.

The 5th's played out a 0-0 draw with Felixstowe 2nd's to end their season with a well earned point. The team is already producing some promising youngsters and next season should see them move up the table as confidence grows.

Ladies 1's Play Off dates

While the majority of us concentrate on stuffing large amounts of Chocolate into our faces over Easter, the 1st's will be preparing hard for their Premiership play off games against Canterbury.

The game is scheduled to take place at Canterbury's Polo Farm ground on Sat 26th April 2003. No time for the game has been announced but it envisaged to be around 13.00.

A win here would see them progress to play the loser of the Slough v Olton match on the following Saturday, with the chance to progress to the final to be played on Mon 5th May.

Canterbury will have strong home support so let's make a concentrated effort to get as many of us down to Kent to cheer the girls on.

Note: The bar at Canterbury is only a few strides from pitch side so it is ideal for a day out!

Ladies 4th's and 5th's in action

The 4th's play their penultimate game this weekend against Felixstowe 1's. With only 2 games to go the 4th's would dearly love to get their first win of a very difficult season for them.

The 5th's play their last game of the season against bottom side Felixstowe 2nd's and after 2 great wins last week they will want to finish their league season on a high.

Men take part in Suffolk Cup

With all league action over for the Men thoughts now turn to winning the Suffolk Cup. With the action taking place at Henley and Tuddenham Road Ipswich will have home advantage and should be red hot favourites to lift the trophy.

Last but by no means least the Vets are due to play Broadland to round off thier season.

Ladies Vets win Suffolk round to go through to East

The Vets beat IES 5-0 to progress to the East round again. The East round is on Sunday 27th April 2003 and Ipswich will be hoping to take a strong squad and make it through to the National finals. Ipswich last won the National title back in 2000.

7th April 2003

Ladies round off season in style

The 1st team did not have a game as they prepare for the play-offs.

The 2nd's claimed 3rd spot with a hard working win against Folkestone. A very good season and with them only being 4 points of the title winners Letchworth, they know that next season could se them moving every closer to repeating their league win of 2000.

The 3rd's needing  a point to stay out of relegation danger, thrashed Long Sutton 5-1 in probably their best performance of the season. A great team effort and they too know that next season is looking good.

The 4th's unfortunately could not make it a clean sweep and lost 1-0 to Castaways. They are now almost certainly relegated to Div 1 hockey but that should give them a good season next year to regroup and come back even stronger.

Finally the 5th's had 2 games and remarkably got a win out of both of them. 2 great performances with such a young side bodes well for the future.

A great weekend for the majority of teams, the highlight being the 3rd's win. With the East teams finished the thoughts turn to the remaining sides and hopefully their success's to cap a fine first merged season for Ipswich Hockey Club.

7th April 2003

Men end in 8 goal spree

The 1st team got a bagful of goals as they rounded off their season in style beating Broxbourne 8-2. The final league position of 5th is not perhaps ideal but with them only being 3 points off second place and knowing that this was a rebuilding season it bodes well for next year.

This 2nd's did not get the win they wanted and had to settle for a 2-2 draw but it made no difference as leaders Bedford gained the win and therefore took the title. A great season for the 2's in their first year in Premier B.

The 3rd's gained promotion with a 1-0 victory over Thurrock. So next season they will be in Div 3 SE well done lads!

The 4th's ended on a fab win a 6-3 thrashing off Cranes. This win sees them end in 7th and showed a remarkable turn around from the beginning of the season.

The 5th's obviously a bit rusty form no game for 2 weeks went down 5-0 to Braintree 2's. Their final league placing was a creditable 5th.

The 6th's beat Old Southendian 5th's. 8-1 toe end their season in style and finish in 4th place.

Finally the Vet's play Pelicans awaiting result

So congratulations to the 3's on their promotion and also to the rest of the teams that have done so well. With only 2 teams out of the whole Club, both Ladies and men's losing it was almost a perfect weekend for the club and probably one of our best ones of the season.

4th April 2003

Ladies 2nd's lead final phase

The 1st team have a well deserved weekend off as they celebrate making the play-offs and giving themselves a chance at a European place. The team are not back in competitive action until sat 26tyh April but will be playing a serious of practice match's leading up to that game.

The 2nd's are safe in 3rd place and will want to enjoy their game on Saturday after making the long trip to Folkestone. A good win will end the season in style.

The 3rd's need at least a point to be sure of safety against Long Sutton and will be aware that it would also send their opponents down. A hard match but one they are determined to win.

The 4th's can still avoid relegation but need to get that vital win against Castaways. Come on girls you know you can do it.

Finally the 5th's get back into action against Castaways 2nd's.

So can the 3rd's and 4th's pull out of relegation trouble? Lets hope so.

4th April 2003

Men want a win.

The 1st team will be looking to get back that winning feeling on sat as they take on Broxbourne.

This 2nd's need a win and a slip up from Bedford if they want to grab the title otherwise it is a very creditable 2nd place.

The 3rd's mathematically are promoted but a win against Thurrock would be the icing on the cake.

The 4th's get back to action against local side Crane and again will want to end on a winning note.

The 5th's without a game for 2 weeks take on Braintree 2nd's and will be hoping for a repeat of their 3-0 victory in October

The 6th's also back in action take on Old Southendian 5th's.

Finally the Vet's play Pelicans.

With a bit of luck we could have a league winner in the 2's.
